This Petronas advertisement was found in The Sun newspaper on Tuesday, 4th December 2014. With a Petronas logo on the top right, this full-page advertisement features four good-looking guys suited up in professional racing suit. A prominent message – “Mesti cabar lagi!” – stands out in the middle of the page.
In my opinion, this advertisement applies four persuasion methods. The first one is using credible communicators. At the bottom of the advertisement, there are short bios of the four representatives, who are apparently professional racers. For instance, Ramdan Rosli is a PETRONAS AHM Malaysia Moto3TM Rider. When people see the backgrounds of these four people, they will more or less trust the brand as there are real racers supporting it, and in a way it implies that these racers trust this brand of fuel. These racers are credible because racing is directly related to fuel.
Next, attractive communicators are used in this advertisement. These guys are rather good-looking, and they look professional when being fully suit-up in racing attires sponsored by Petronas.
Also, this advertisement conveys messages that do not appear to change attitude. The message “Mesti cabar lagi!”, which literally means “Must challenge again!”, does not appear to manipulate the readers’ attitude towards Petronas. It does not show any tendency to persuade the readers to use the brand. Also, “Bravo to our talents (…) in the world of motorsports” is also not directly related to the product itself. However, these messages do attempt to provide a positive image for the fuel brand.
Finally, the tagline “Mesti cabar lagi!”is a message with emotional content. This enthusiastic message may appeal to most teenagers; they may be enthralled by this energetic quote. This is an effective method of persuasion as emotional contents are much more appealing than logical analysis. “Young and Fearless” is also an effective title, delivering a message parallel to the tagline. This advertising mood is efficient to attract customers especially young drivers who seek for challenges.
I learnt to relate social psychological concept to everyday lives and also strengthened my grasp of the concepts.
